greek meatballs ("Soutzoukakia")

(serves 4)

For the meatballs:

  • 650g lean ground beef

  • 2/3 cup breading

  • 4 tbsp red wine

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • pinch of cinnamon

  • salt (1 tsp), pepper

For the sauce:

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1 tsp rosemary

  • 400g chopped tomatoes, blitzed

  • salt, pepper

  • 2 tbsp olive oil


For the sauce:

In a wide and shallow pot, add tomato, garlic, rosemary, 2 cups water, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, uncovered, 30 min. Add olive oil at the end.

For the meatballs:

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200°C.

Add all meatball ingredients into a bowl and shape oval-like meatballs. Place them on a baking sheet on a tray, and cook in oven for 10 min.

Remove from the oven, and add them to the sauce.

Cover with lid and simmer for an additional 30 min.

Serve on pasta or rice.
